Data Management: Design Principals

In the greatest level there's two primary design concepts: an application-Defined Platform and Multi-Dimensional Appliances. Let’s unpack both.

Software Defined Platform

To be able to offer the number of abilities needed, a strong data management solution requires a lot of versatility. The best approach to delivering that versatility is thru an application-defined, API-based platform. Below are the core tenets from the software-defined platform:

  • Form factor: As the software-defined data platform could be delivered being an integrated appliance, exactly the same abilities could be acquired inside a software-only form factor, placed on an application-defined hardware platform on-premises or perhaps in the cloud.
  • Data services: Software-defined applies beyond form factor - additionally, it relates to the platform’s capability to provide flexible data services. Just one software-defined platform offers the full suite of information protection abilities from archive, lengthy-term retention and backup / recovery to disaster recovery and business continuity spanning the whole RTO / RPO spectrum.
  • Cyber recovery: It supports the opportunity to recover your computer data on-premises or perhaps in the cloud, and also the capacity to recuperate data in case of a ransomware attack by supplying secure air-gapped solutions.
  • Efficiency, security and integrity: The answer should support data reduction techniques for example compression and deduplication while making certain the security from the data through file encryption and it is integrity via a data invulnerability architecture.
  • Data management: The program-defined platform supports an array of data management use cases from fast, lightweight copies for dev / test, analytics, etc. to numerous compliance use cases, including HIPAA, SEC and GDPR.
  • Flexible architecture: The answer is architected utilizing a flexible and scalable modern, services-based platform, enabling support for any full spectrum of workloads varying from traditional enterprise applications to modern cloud native applications.
  • Access methods: The woking platform supports a number of access methods, including full data restore, application-directed recovery, and API access for third-party integrations. The API architecture enables the entire power the woking platform through printed, stable and well-documented APIs.
  • Consumption methods: It offers the opportunity to consume abilities either like a platform managed through the finish user or like a SaaS offering, that is managed through the provider.
  • Automation: The woking platform embeds and leverages artificial intelligence and/or machine learning strategies to automate generally performed workflows to put data around the correct tier and media type, identify and mitigate system and security issues, provide access through NLP channels, etc.

Multi-Dimensional Appliances

The 2nd foundational tenet needed to enhance an application-defined platform is multi-dimensional appliances, and individuals core elements are:

  • Scale: The applying must be capable of scale in position, and also to scale up and scale out, while beginning having a small size and adding additional capacity through either more disks or flash drives or enabled through licensing within the same form factor. It may scale up with the addition of more disk or flash trays behind a current controller. And, it may scale out with the addition of additional appliance capacity units.
  • Media: The kind of storage could be traditional spinning disk media, all flash, or emerging media for example Non-Volatile Memory express (NVMe) and then-generation Storage Class Memory (SCM). A conventional backup storage scenario may leverage all HDDs, possibly complemented with little bit of flash. Alternatively, our prime-performance of-flash media might be optimal for dev/make sure analytics use cases.
  • Deployment: Exactly the same appliance configuration could be deployed on-premises within an integrated form factor, or perhaps in an application-only form factor conntacting commodity protection storage. It is also deployed within the cloud like a software-only appliance conntacting object storage or offered as SaaS with a company.
  • Use cases: The applying is made to support a complete selection of software-defined platform use cases, varying from traditional, capacity-oriented use cases (archive, lengthy-term retention, backup, restore) to performance-oriented use cases (replication, disaster recovery, dev/test, analytics).
  • Security and integrity: The applying supports security abilities for example file encryption in position as well as in flight plus key management. Additionally, it supports data resilience and integrity with the data invulnerability architecture.
  • Management: The multi-dimensional appliance could be managed through traditional on-board system management techniques. It is also managed via a SaaS-based management portal that may manage large, multi-site environments. Furthermore, the woking platform provides wealthy APIs for third-party integrations and custom, finish user workflows.
  • Resiliency: The applying auto-finds out component and system failures, in addition to security intrusions and anomalies. Additionally to alerting the administrator, it tries to remediate the fault via a self-healing architecture or stop suspicious activity and knowledge sets.
  • High availability and non-disruptive operations: The machine provides high availability and non-disruptive operations (NDO) through component-level redundancy and heuristic-based predictive software that proactively finds out, isolates and remediates failure. The machine provides the opportunity to upgrade different software and firmware within the system non-disruptively with minimal operator intervention
  • Search and Analytics: The multi-dimensional appliance provides wealthy search and analytics functionality. It offers predictive search abilities in the VM level, files inside the VM as well as content within individuals files. It offers detailed analytics around the nature from the stored data from the kind of files, for their age, towards the sensitivity from the content.
  • Efficiency: Efficiency is used by means of data reduction techniques for example deduplication and compression, which consequently reduces bandwidth use when sent within the wire. It's also cloud aware - so, for instance, when searching an information set kept in the cloud it just displays the catalog and just selectively downloads the files required to reduce cloud egress costs.
  • Performance: The applying supports an array of performance characteristics meant for an extensive selection of RPOs and alter rates. It supports an adequate quantity of consume streams and consume rates even going to support zero RPO (i.e. no loss of data) on the quickly altering workload.

Formulating a Digital Rescue Plan

The 4th Industrial Revolution is here now. Consider this because the data era a time period of deep connectivity driven by technology and operated by unparalleled levels of data.  We're in a pivotal reason for history in which the options are endless, and also the implications are huge.

The very first three industrial revolutions were also pivotal points in history. Each unique, but all common within their effect on existence once we understood it at that time. Each period introduced new methods to harness energy they are driving enhancements. These enhancements essentially altered and produced new industries and economic models with the development of factories over agriculture, within the first revolution mass production, communication, and transportation within the second and automation and also the rise of electronics within the third. With every industrial revolution, we produced more good ways to work, in-turn improving productivity and driving growth rates.

The 4th Industrial Revolution, however, is all about data and also the digitalization of all things from metropolitan areas and factories to homes and cars. This interconnectedness, along with emerging technologies for example 5G, AI, AR/VR, and IoT, are blurring the lines between our physical and digital worlds and driving new focus on the client experience.

Many companies today happen to be feeling the outcome of the digitalization and also the challenges connected with storing, analyzing, activating, and securing the resulting data.  So that as many companies are simply starting to formulate an agenda to understand the advantages of their data, the quantity of information they're managing is ongoing to develop for a price that's only now beginning to become recognized.

  • In the Dell Technologies Global Data Protection Index Study, we found that typically organizations managed 9.7PB of information in 2018, when compared to 1.45PB managed in 2016. That’s an explosive development of 569%!
  • Inside a recent whitepaper, IDC predicts the Global Datasphere will grow from 33 Zettabytes of information to 175 Zettabytes by 2025.
  • The Dell Technologies Digital Transformation Index Study states ‘information overload’ is quickly climbing the very best 10 listing of barriers companies are facing when attempting to digitally transform.

This explosion of information causes rippling effects in each and every industry. In the cloud towards the edge, business leaders are now being challenged to push the limitations of established order.

Digital Save Plan

If you're ending up around the wrong side of the rate of growth, then you aren't alone. In the Digital Transformation Index Study, we found that regardless of the indisputable move perfectly into a digital world, 91% of businesses’ digital transformation programs continue to be within their infancy. But our study also shows these companies are starting to formulate an electronic save intend to increase productivity, profitability, revenue growth, customer retention, and Return on investment.  And, within five years 77% of economic leaders believe they can harness emerging technologies to calculate customer demands and manage sources, while 68% plan to use emerging technologies to enhance logistics efficiency.

Things I like relating to this study may be the transfer of technology investments companies are earning within the next 1-three years, than the initial study in 2016.  For instance, in 2016, cybersecurity, quantum computing, VR/AR, and cognitive systems investments weren’t even on top 10 list. In 2018, cybersecurity, IoT technology, multi-cloud atmosphere and AI top their email list, with cybersecurity jumping to the main place.  This transfer of technology investments signifies that companies are planning much more about securing their data and emerging technologies than simply 2 yrs ago.

Even though data security is crucial, companies should also consider data creation. More applications are running in the edge than in the past. With IoT, smart cars, and smart metropolitan areas, data generation in the edge is near exploding. Inside a recent Gartner article entitled What Edge Computing Method for Infrastructure and processes Leaders “around 10% of enterprise-generated information is produced and processed outdoors a conventional centralized data center or cloud. By 2025, Gartner predicts this figure will achieve 75%”.  Main point here, the advantage will play a vital role later on of information creation.

Within the 4th Industrial Revolution, an extensive digital save plan must include modern infrastructure to aid emerging technologies and also the development in data companies must manage, an advantage-to-cloud data strategy, and also the tools and education your workforce will have to strengthen your business succeed.

Transformation for action

When the first three industrial revolutions have trained us anything, it’s that existence as you may know it'll change, jobs is going to be substituted with technology, new jobs is going to be born, so we can speed up and much more effortlessly. But the direction to get there's not simple. Digital transformation is really a complex procedure that needs time to work.

I encourage you to definitely browse the full Digital Transformation Index Study.  Also, look in my approaching blogs where I'll feature customers who have undergone their very own digital transformation journey, leveraging emerging technologies. They’ll share valuable insights and advice that you should leverage in your transformation journey.

Dell Technologies and Cisco Reaffirm Joint Commitment to Converged Infrastructure with Multi-Year Agreement

There’s industry chatter about what the growing adoption of hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) might mean for the converged infrastructure (CI) space. As a company that retains its top spot in IDC’s Certified Reference Systems & Integrated Infrastructure Tracker with a 48% share — nearly 1.5X that of any other vendor — and serves thousands of customers who rely on CI, Dell EMC thinks it’s clear CI will remain a popular choice for years to come.

We continue to invest in energizing the CI space, helping customers to modernize and automate for the cloud era on our VxBlock 1000 platform. With this legacy of leadership and innovation, it’s no wonder IDC reports that Dell EMC is the #1 provider of converged systems for the past six years.

Today, we’re announcing the next key milestone in our commitment to CI innovation: the multi-year extension of our longstanding systems integrator agreement with Cisco.

“It’s difficult to overstate Dell EMC’s decade-long commitment to the converged infrastructure market,” said Eric Sheppard, Research Vice President, IDC. “The enormous resources Dell EMC has invested into this market have been directly responsible for driving down data center costs, complexity and risk for the many organizations running the company’s converged infrastructure all around the world. Dell EMC’s continued investments also stand as proof of the company’s commitment to the market and a deep belief in the benefits convergence brings to the datacenter.”

Working Together to Drive CI Innovation and Value

As you may know, Dell EMC (then EMC) and Cisco were the first to market with a CI system when we formed a joint venture with VMware in 2009.

Since then, Cisco has provided networking (Nexus) and compute (UCS) technology for Dell EMC through multiple iterations of VxBlock, while Dell EMC has continued to be a top-tier reseller of Cisco technology. Cisco rounds out the all-in-one VxBlock 1000 technology stack that’s built on powerful Dell EMC storage and data protection, giving businesses a reliable and highly performant platform for VMware cloud operations.

The newly inked agreement entails continued company alignment across multiple organizations: executive, product development, marketing and sales. This means we’ll continue to share product roadmaps and collaborate on strategic development activities, with Cisco investing in a range of Dell EMC sales, marketing and training initiatives to support VxBlock 1000.

Most recently, this joint development introduced Cisco UCS 6454 fabric interconnect support for higher scale, performance and throughput in VxBlock 1000, as well as a broader range of Cisco M5 server options, including the new Performance Optimized UCS C480 M5.

With so many cloud-ready capabilities in VxBlock 1000, we are seamlessly bridging our CI customers to the new multi-cloud landscape.

Customer Benefits from this Powerhouse CI Partnership

The primary factor driving Dell EMC and Cisco’s commitment to working together on CI is the enormous range of benefits it provides each of our customers.

VxBlock 1000 users experience improved assurance and lower operational risk through Dell EMC’s lifecycle management of the included Cisco technologies, which are fully integrated into a single infrastructure stack along with Dell EMC storage and data protection. They also enjoy faster support and time to resolution thanks to Dell EMC’s specialized support staff, who are highly trained and experienced in working with Cisco technologies.

The joint commitment also delivers ongoing, rapid access to fully tested Cisco technology options that are incorporated into VxBlock 1000. Of course, none of these benefits would be worthwhile if our joint projects didn’t also deliver on the promise of CI — with consistently simpler, faster ways to support mission-critical workloads and cloud initiatives.

I know I speak on behalf of Dell Technologies in expressing excitement and appreciation for our continued alliance with Cisco around this highly successful CI business. Our collective investments of engineering, technology and support has resulted in a decade-long leadership position of the CI category bolstered by a long list of innovations built into the VxBlock 1000 platform. It’s a sentiment that we don’t take lightly and is something we’re grateful is also shared by our partners at Cisco.

“Cisco is committed to the partnership with Dell EMC and to jointly delivering innovative solutions for our VxBlock customers. By extending this agreement, we are continuing to provide powerful and integrated technologies with Cisco UCS, Nexus and MDS and delivering on our commitment to innovation for VxBlock.” – Frank Palumbo, SVP, Global Data Center Sales, Cisco

Help Your Customers Focus on Their Data

Dell EMC ECS 3.3 software upgrade helps customers unlock value – and helps you protect your revenue and boost your business

Sometimes – in business as well as in life – we put too much emphasis on the wrong thing.

Technology is a case in point. It can deliver all kinds of benefits in terms of costs, simplicity and accessibility. But technology is only part of the story – what truly counts is the message – and that’s information.

The information challenge

Deriving value from that information can be a real challenge. As we all know, there is a great deal of information, and it’s growing at a breathtaking pace. In addition, a large amount of it is unstructured. Much of it is siloed, too.

For all these reasons and more, it’s hard to harness the data available, and use it as the foundation of the digital business. If you also factor in the data security and compliance considerations, it’s no wonder many organizations are finding the management of, and access to, their information such a burden.

Dell EMC ECS Gen 3.3: Help customers focus on the right thing

Dell EMC’s ECS storage environment is designed to help your customers focus on the right thing. This software-defined, cloud-scale, object storage platform takes advantage of the benefits of the cloud, but also takes it one step further by building IT infrastructure centered around what matters most – their data.

The latest software announcement – Generation 3.3 – delivers significant enhancements, including:

  • Enterprise-readiness: Improve data protection and compliance mandates in the age of evolving security needs
  • Improved ROI: Customers get a 12% improvement in storage costs that is up to 59.5% lower TCO than the public cloud
  • Enhanced data visibility: Make more accurate forecasts and take action on capacity alerts
  • Faster time-to-insights: Unlock new insights from data faster than ever before
  • Low-touch migrations: Migrate Atmos deployments to Dell EMC ECS without productivity impacts

The benefits to customers…

Gartner Group lists Dell EMC ECS as a Leader in its Distributed File and Object Storage Magic Quadrant 2017. Dell EMC ECS enables your customers to:

  • Modernize their infrastructure
  • Secure their data capital
  • Lay the foundation for a data-driven business
  • Accelerate application development

… and the benefits to you

Dell EMC ECS enables you to give your customers an alternative to the public cloud, but on their own premises – which means more control for them, and more revenue protection for you.

It enables you to offer them enterprise-grade object storage that is purpose-built for both traditional and modern applications, with the flexibility to capture, store, protect, and manage unstructured data at a public cloud-like scale.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly of all, it enables you to help them unlock the value in their data, and build their digital future, while also achieving enterprise-grade security standards, lower and more predictable storage costs, and enhanced visibility into their data assets.
